Then you need to start looking for the right job for you.

Before you start your search consider the following:

  • What hours are you avaliable to work each week? Do you need regular hours or flexibility?
  • Do you have any Telemarketing or relevant Experience? For instance sales or customer service work are both good types of experience to have, as are any jobs where you used the phone to speak to clients.
  • How much money would you like to earn per hour?
  • What location suits you? You may well have to travel there every day, so it needs to be convenient to you.
  • Are you after long term or short term employment?
  • Do you want a job with lots of guidance and support or do you prefer to work autonomously?

When you have the answers to these questions it’s time to begin your search.

Your options are normally to apply for jobs directly with employers who are advertising positions avaliable, or to visit with Recruitiment Agencies and get listed on their books for work.

So which is right for you?

Recruitment Agencies

If you want flexible work or prefer to work short term contracts then being listed with a specialist Telemarketing Agency could be for you.

In this situation you would interview with the agancy directly and then they would send you out to potential employers. This may mean a second interview with the employer if it is a full time job or long term contract they are offering. For casual positions you would not normally need to have an interview with the employer and in fact the agency would actually remain your direct employer as they will pay your wages, superannuation and taxes. They then bill the company you are working for for your time.

Private Advertisers

This is the way most people get a job in Telemarketing. They apply for an advertised position directly with the potential employer. This is great if you are looking for a permanent and long term role.

Where to find Jobs

The best place is online. In Australia that means going to sites like seek.com.au, mycareer.com.au or careerone.com.au

There are many smaller job listing sites, so do a search in your area.

Alternately, if you are looking to get a job in your local area, local newspapers can be a good place to get a job that really suits. Many small businesses will only advertise locally so that they only get local residents applying. That way they know that the location is suitable for you long term.

Applying for the job

I recommend that you always apply via telephone for any Telemarketing Role. Why? Because it shows the potential employer that you are confident on the phone!! And that is exactly what they are looking for!

For the many years that I recruited Telemarketers for my own Call Centre the most annoying thing for me was sorting through hundreds of email job applications, particularly when I had actually requested phone applications only. To me it always suggested that the applicant was not phone confident or that they were not that interested in my job.

Phone Interview

When you call to apply for the job, this is in fact your first interview. The person speaking to you will be listening to your:

  • Tone
  • Voice volume
  • Confidence and sense of self-assuredness
  • Likeability
  • Professionalism

Of course they will also want to know about your experience, why you are interested in the job and the hours you can commit to amongst other things. They will be thinking about your overall presentation over the phone and if you would relate well to their customers.

How promptly and confidently you answer their questions, will help them decide whether or not to invite you in for a face to face interview. They want to feel that you are enthusiastic about the role and most importantly, they must like you.

Now you have an interview booked you are half way there. This is a great sign when you want to get a job. Personally, I have never invited anyone in for a face to face interview unless they first impressed me over the phone!
