Small Business is interesting, isn’t it? I know from being a Small Business owner myself for 12 years that a Small Business Marketing Strategy is easily overlooked. It happens so simply. We are busy, there is more to do than we can do. Most of all, there is just so much to think about when it all falls on your shoulders. And how do you figure out where to best spend your time?
I personally have always applied the law of the swivel chair….taught to me many years ago. The concept here is that you take a few moments each day to sit in your imaginary swivel chair and turn to look at each area of your business. By giving each area just a few minutes a day, you will see what is missing, what needs implementing, improving or totally changing. And by doing the swivel chair process each day, you stay on top of things, before they get on top of you….Now that’s a good Small Business Strategy!
Marketing in particular is often overlooked as it can seem so overwhelming! My aim here is to give you a list of small business ideas that are simple and that you can implement on your own, that will help you to generate a better sales result at the end of the day.
We will look at a list of small business ideas to help you along with your marketing strategy:
- Small Business Marketing Strategy
- Small Business Telemarketing
- Small Business Mailing Lists
- Small Business Leads
My Small Business Strategy personally, has always been to include Telemarketing as part of my Customer building process. Why?
For a few reasons:
- It works
- Once you know how it is actually quite simple
- It is a cheap way to convert more prospects
- It works very well combined with other small business marketing strategy
The key here, I believe, is to make telemarketing a part of the sales and marketing strategy… not the whole strategy!
Sometimes small business owners seem to think that telemarketing is to be used alone. It can be, however…
(And here is the best Small Business Marketing Tip I can give you:)
that is not the most effective use of a telemarketing campaign…
A far better idea is to use a 3 step process that includes Telemarketing. Each step in that process can be a telemarketing call if that works for you, but it doesn’t have to be. The secret here is to have at least 3 contacts of some description with your prospect prior to asking for a buying decision.
Let’s say for example that you did want to use the telephone exclusively for your small business marketing strategy. You might follow this formula…
Contact 1 — A Phone call to get the name and email address of the decision maker in the business in regard to your product/ service.
During this call your aim may be to build a little rapport with each person you speak to and ultimately to get through to your decision maker.
When you do get through to the decision maker, your aim is to get permission to email out information and set a time for a follow up call. Now this may be one call, it may be 2 or 3 calls, depending on how well you go getting past what we call the “gatekeeper.” The “gatekeeper” is the person who screens the calls for the decision maker. There are ways to get around this person. The best being to use assumptive language, to not sound like a telemarketer and to build rapport with the gatekeeper.
Contact 2 – This may actually be your 3rd or 4th contact, but let’s call it contact 2. Contact 2 is the email you send out.
Contact 3 – This is the follow up call you make to the decision maker at the time you had both agreed you would call. It is not until this call that you would ask for any buying decision.
The thing is we want results now! And I think this is where the idea of making one cold call to a prospect came from. We want it to be easy and quick….and it can be, just not that quick!!
By slowing it down you have a small business telemarketing formula that works. I’m sure you’d agree that it’s worth the extra couple of contacts to get your desired “yes” result. In fact a one call cold calling campaign will get you a very low conversion rate…maybe 5%. By adding a few extra contacts and slowing down the process just a little, you will easily get anywhere from 3 – 10 times that result.
