Some skills come naturally and some need to be developed. I believe that anyone who wants to be a Great Telemarketer can be. That desire is the key! The desire to be good at anything will help you to do the necessary work to get there.

These are good general guidelines for what type of person makes a good Telemarketer. Note which applies to you currently and those which you believe you can develop along the way.

  • A clear telephone voice
  • Organised
  • Speak fluently and at a nice pace
  • People must enjoy speaking to you (particularly the person interviewing you)
  • Must enjoy speaking to others
  • You must sound happy, enthusiastic and friendly
  • Be Disciplined
  • Communicate clearly
  • Good at reading people
  • Can you commit to the role long term or are you after a short term role?
  • Can follow a sript and sound natural
  • Think quick on your feet and think laterally
  • Be a confident speaker, but not a constant chatterbox
  • Believe in what you are selling
  • Telephone experience will also serve you well

If you have the majority of these basic skills….then you need to develop sales and people skills to deepen your understanding of the sales process. This is what will put you a step above the rest.

Then we need to consider your attitude.

Do you have the right attitude to be successful as a telemarketer?

  • Are you optimistic?
  • Are you confident or can you pretend to be for now?
  • Do you take rejection personally? You can’t afford to do that as a Telemarketer.
  • Do you have a positive attitude?
  • Are you the type who is committed and passionate?
  • Are you patient?
  • Are you persistent?
